The arrested ‘godman’ Rampal was on Sunday taken back to his Satlok Ashram near Barwala by Haryana Police to investigate the activities of the sect leader and his sect.
This is the first time that the sect leader was brought back to his 12-acre ashram complex after his arrest.
Rampal was taken to the ashram to help the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is searching his ashram complex since Thursday, to uncover the secrets of the complex, including huge lockers kept there. A spokesperson of Haryana Police said that during the search operation on Sunday, a huge cache of arms and ammunition, 12 petrol bombs were found from the highly fortified complex. The police teams recovered 4,250 sticks, four .315 bore rifles, five .12 bore rifles, 171 helmets, 12 petrol bombs, two bulletproof jackets and eight live cartridges.
Sixty-three-year-old Rampal was arrested on November 19 from his ashram, where a thorough search has been going on for the last four days.
Rampal, who was produced before the Punjab and Haryana High Court a day after his arrest in connection with a contempt of court case, was later remanded in police custody for five days by a court in Hisar. Rampal has been slapped with cases of murder, attempt to murder, sedition, rioting, illegal detention and others. During the standoff of nearly 10 days and violent clashes between Rampal’s followers and the police, five women and an infant had died, while more than 200 people were injured. For the search operation, the police have divided the ashram into three zones.
The sprawling ashram complex was found to be under constant surveillance of CCTV cameras installed at several key points to keep tabs on the movements of followers, who largely came from low income strata. The police spokesperson said that the search operation will continue for a few days more as the ashram was spread over a vast area.
