Plastic & polythene waste can be utilised for roads construction: Uma

Union Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation, Uma Bharti on Monday said that a solution has been found for the plastic and polythene waste as it can be utilized for the construction of roads.

The Union Minister was talking to the mediapersons after the launch of Central Government’s GOBARDHAN scheme from Karnal in Haryana.

Bharti said the scheme focused on managing and converting cattle dung and solid waste from farms and fields to useful compost, biogas and bio-CNG.

Bio-gas plants from cattle dung will be set up at individual or community level and also at the level of self help groups (SHGs) and NGOs like Gaushalas. This will help in keeping the villages clean and generate energy while increasing the income of farmers and cattle herders, she said.

It will encourage the farmers to start looking at dung and other waste not just as waste but as a source of income, she added.

The Union Minister expressed the confidence that as Haryana had done best in the Bachao–Beti Padhao campaign, it would also be in the forefront in the implementation of the GOBARDHAN scheme.

In response to queries in respect to the declining ground water  level in some areas of Haryana and Punjab, she said that some of these  areas had come under the dark zone and we are hopeful  that Haryana would work to emerge out of this problem.

She further said that Prime Minister i has called for a change in the country and this change should also be accepted. While referring to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, she said that few areas have become hundred per cent free from open defecation. But we have to take these areas towards ODF plus so as to make these areas cleaner, she added.
