The work for laying underground pipelines for the supply of cooking gas in Chandigarh is likely to kick off shortly.
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and the Adani Gas, which would lay the network of gas pipelines in the city, has sought assistance of the UT Administration for the project.
The IOC-Adani Gas has been awarded the ambitious project by Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) for laying, building and operating the gas pipeline network in Chandigarh.
Now, the nitty-gritty details of laying the pipelines here would be worked out by IOC-Adani Gas in assistance with the UT Administration.
A senior official of the UT Administration said, “The IOC-Adani Gas has sought the assistance of the UT Administration for the project. The UT would provide them the information of underground pipelines network here in the city and details would be worked out for the project.”
“All the works under the project would be carried out by IOC-Adani Gas. And, pipelines would be laid near the roads here. Firstly, transmission lines from supply centre at Rajpura to the city would be laid and later, distribution lines to various sectors would be laid for providing cooking gas to the kitchens of the city residents,” said the senior official.
The official added, “Though the company has prepared drawings for laying the pipelines, some changes may be included later if required.”
After completion of the project, the city residents would be able to enjoy the facility of piped natural gas (PNG) used for cooking purposes. The project would benefit about 10.55 lakh population in Chandigarh that have lPG connections.
Also, pipelines of compressed natural gas (CNG) used as fuel in vehicles would be laid in Chandigarh.
Recently, the Centre had approved the project to provide piped natural gas to the residents of Chandigarh and satellite townships of Mohali and Panchkula. Apart from the tricity, the piped gas line will also cater to Punjore, Baddi, Parwanoo and Nalagarh, among other places.
The UT official added, “Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) would decide the tariff to be charged from the residents for the supply of PNG. The residents would be charged according to the metres to be installed in the houses under the project.”
