PGIMER to organise a day's workshop on fake meds

The Department of Pharmacology, PGIMER is all set to organise a one day workshop on methods to check spurious medicines. “This is the first time, when PGI is going to provide a platform to Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) an autonomous institution created to set standards of drugs in the country and Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), to deliver lecture and give know how to doctors as well as other pharmacies about the genuineness of drugs”, said Dr Bikash Medhi, additional Professor of department of Pharmacology.

Medhi, who is also coordinator for the workshop added that around 170 delegates from different sectors including hospitals, clinics and pharmacies are expected to attend this workshop. A drug is considered “Not of standard Quality” or substandard if it fails to comply with any of the parameters of the overall standards laid down.

Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO)’ admits that despite Indian Pharmaceutical Industry having a domestic turnover of  thousands of crores, the shadow of spurious drugs is likely to raise apprehensions about the availability of safe and genuine drugs from India in general.
