It was the tenth cadaveric organ donation in 2017 in PGIMER, providing a fresh lease of life to two critical patients fighting their debilitating kidney ailment and battling for their survival.
The untimely and tragic death of Bagri, 22 years of age, from village Barhi Kherhi near Patiala is extremely difficult to reconcile with. It was the fateful day of February 7 when Bagri was critically injured in a road accident after a vehicle hit him while going on his bike. He sustained severe head injury and fell unconscious. Without losing any time, he was rushed to PGIMER and was admitted here in an extremely critical condition on the same day.
But destiny had something else in store as Bagri could not be revived and subsequently, after following the protocols as per THOA 1994, Bagri was declared brain dead on February 17.
In a rare gesture of courage and magnanimity, the brave-heart family of Bagri did not let the tragic death of their young son go in vain and consented for organ donation when the transplant coordinators raised the matter with them. Following this, the consented organs were retrieved from the deceased, which through transplantation enabled second lease of life to two patients fighting their debilitating kidney ailment and ended their battle for their survival on February 18.
Despite this traumatic tragedy, the brave-heart father of deceased Bagri showed unprecedented courage when he stated, "No one can imagine the pain and trauma of losing a young son. My backbone is broken with his departure. God forbid even my enemy should not be made to go through what I am facing today. Nothing in this world can fill this vacuum caused by my son’s untimely death. With organ donation, at least I will be able to save someone else the pain and trauma of losing their children. Not only Bagri will stay in our hearts, he will stay in the hearts of those also, whom he has given life while leaving from this world.”
The two kidney recipients have been on continuous dialysis for over three to four years and have been wait-listed here in PGIMER.
