PGIMER-Govt pact may rid Amritsar college of staff dearth

To further develop and strengthen the super-speciality cardiothoracic surgery facility at the Amritsar Government Medical College, the Punjab Government on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chandigath's Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).

The move is expected to pave way for the Amritsar College to deal with the shortage of qualified surgeons, anesthetists, and perfusionists, besides making contribution in helping the college to develop and start open heart surgery facility.

The MoU was signed by the State Principal Secretary of Medical Education and Research Vinni Mahajan and PGIMER's director Yogesh Chawla, while State Medical Education and Research Minister Anil Joshi and Advisor to Punjab Government on Health and Medical Education Dr KK Talwar were also present for the event.

"The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Amritsar's Government Medical College, though fully equipped with space and infrastructure, is suffering from a dearth of qualified surgeons, anesthetists and perfusionists. PGIMER, a leading international institute performs all types of open heart surgeries. It also has enough expert manpower to contribute and help develop and start the facility of open heart surgery at the college, added the official spokesperson.

The spokesperson added that it has been agreed that the expert team from PGIMER will visit the Government Medical College periodically to help and guide to strengthen the infrastructure, equipment and arrangements to rectify any shortcomings and help start conducting open heart surgeries there so that the people of Punjab may get the benefit of the service there itself.
