Permit HP to revive old edu system: Virbhadra

Showing concern over deteriorating education standard in the State, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has written to the Central Government seeking power to restore the old system of education in the State.

“The new system of assessment of students and lack of examinations is taking its toll on the education standard of the State and the new system has miserably failed,” said Chief Minister on the sidelines of party workers meet. He said that although the old system of education and assessment system was changed by a new central law but since education was concurrent subject and State should have a say in it and keeping its own interest in mind. “Now a day’s such is the situation that even standard II books can’t be read by a student of standard V and this due to lack of examination and students not getting serious in their studies,” said Singh, adding that in the old system accountability of teachers was there and they were held responsible for any bad results.

He said that five -six years down the line there was competition between Kerala and Himachal Pradesh and sometime we used to rank number one in education and sometime Kerala used to be but now we have gone beyond the list of ten States. “Our education system has deteriorated drastically and the new system has failed miserably in the state and so I have written a letter to union minister of human resource development for reverting back to the old system,” said the chief minister.

He added that when teachers do not have accountability they are taking the studies of the students very lightly as they know that they have to just give grades and no examination is being held. “Due to this reason, there is mass exodus from the government school to private schools, but still many people cannot afford the studies of private schools and we need to revert back to old system of education,” said the Chief Minister.
