Pargat writes to Punjab CM demanding reopening of 2007 Blasphemy case against Dera chief

Known for his uprightness and being outspoken, Punjab Congress MLA Pargat Singh has written to the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh seeking reopening of more than a decade-old blasphemy case against Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda sect head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.

At the same time, the legislator urged the Chief Minister to ensure that with the Congress Government, already completing three and half years in office, should ensure justice in sacrilege and Behbal Kalan, Kotkapura firing cases as promised before the 2017 polls.

Underlining that the Government needs to make all efforts to reopen the 2007 cases, the Olympian-turned-politician pointed that it is imperative “when it is clear that the roots of incidents of sacrileges in 2015 were in criminal negligence of the Punjab Government in blasphemy case of 2007”.

Notably, Dera sect head, who is currently behind bars as a rape and murder convict, was discharged of the charges in 2007 case by Bathinda sessions court in 2014 due to the cancellation report filed by the Punjab Police just before the 2012 assembly polls.

Pargat Singh, Jalandhar Cantt MLA, said that a petition, filed by advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur challenging Dera chief’s discharge, is pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

He asked the Chief Minister to get all the details of the case through Advocate-General and issue instructions to take all steps to get the case reopened so that not only Dera chief can be punished but also the entire conspiracy is brought out.

“This case is actually an example that if a Government and a political party hobnobs with an accused in a highly sensitive and important case, then how disastrous can be the results,” said Pargat in his letter to the Chief Minister.
