Panel suggests to equip Govt hospitals with staff

Expressing concern over inadequate medical specialists and infrastructure in the Government hospitals causing irreparable losses, the Punjab State Commission for Protection of Child Rights on Wednesday suggested to equip the same with adequate medical and paramedical staff. The suggestion was put forth by the Commission’s chairman Sukesh Kalia, during a meeting of the board members wherein ludhiana Civil Surgeon (CS) and Senior Medical Officer (SMO) have been summoned on connection with recent incident of death of six infants.

The two health officials have been summoned by the Commission to take stock of the latest updates in the “unfortunate” incident that took place in November 2014 at ludhiana’s newly-set up Mother and Child Care Hospital where six infants died due to inadequate staff and insufficient infrastructure and funds.

Both officials briefed Kalia about strict administrative action taken against the medical officers and other paramedical staff found guilty of negligence during the high level enquiry conducted in the incident. He also asked them to take ample administrative measures so that this kind of unfortunate situation could be averted in future.

Kalia also assured the health officers that their genuine grievances and hardships would be considered at the higher level and resolved. Referring to the lack of funds for the newly-set up Mother and Child Institutes in the State, Kalia said that he would personally take up this issue with the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
