The overloaded vehicles plying in Haryana would soon go off-road with the State Government issuing strict directives to curb the menace of overloaded vehicles, causing danger to the road users and other vehicles.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar lal on Wednesday gave approval to impose fine and other actions to be taken against overloaded vehicles as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, 1988.
The Chief Minister also directed to set up weigh bridges at entry points in the state on the pattern of Gujarat so as to effectively curb the menace of overloading of vehicles.
An official spokesman of the State Government said that a decision to this effect has been taken in view of the directions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety for curbing the menace of overloading.
He said that in case of overload up to 50 per cent of Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), fine would be imposed as per Section 194 of MV Act and there would be endorsement of overload on Permit as per Section 114 of the MV Act.
The vehicle would not be allowed to move ahead unless excess load is removed. There is also provision of suspension and possession of driving license for the period of three months. Similarly, in case of overload above 50 per cent of GVW, besides these conditions, the period of suspension of driving license would be up to six months, said the spokesman.
FIR would also be lodged under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984. Also, registration certificate would be suspended under Section 53 for one month, he added.
The new directions will likely to put an end on the mining mafia, which are carrying the material for construction activities beyond the permissible limits, especially from the Rajasthan area in Haryana.
