A large number of people, many of them females, go missing every year from Chandigarh. Though police claims that many of them have returned to their families, but a majority of missing and abducted people remain untraced. According to the figures of National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) 75.68 per cent people, who were abducted or went missing in the year 2014, are still untraced.

According to these figures, 148 complaints were received of missing and abduction cases in 2014. Out of the 148 complaints, 106 were related to missing cases and 42 about abducted people. In the year 2014, 68 women went missing from Chandigarh. Out of 148, only 36 were traced by the local police, while 112 others still remain untraced. In the abduction cases, police have arrested 36 people from Chandigarh.

Devi Sirohi, Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights, said that it’s a shame that the Chandigarh police have failed to trace the missing children and alleged that police are not doing enough to find them. Police, on the other hand, claimed that efforts are still on to trace the missing people. They said many missing and abducted people were traced,  however most of them go untraced, as the in majority of cases people leave their residence on their own will.
