Opposition criticises decision to hold elections in Hry colleges and varsities

A day after Haryana Government announced to conduct indirect elections for college/university student union in the State, the Opposition on Wednesday criticised the move.

Haryana Congress chief Ashok Tanwar while talking to the mediapersons said that we do not support the move. Instead of indirect election, direct elections should be held in the colleges or universities of the state, said he.

Condemning government’s move, Tanwar said that BJP led State Government has failed to fulfil the long pending demand of students in the state.

On the other hand, leader of opposition and INlD’s senior leader Abhay Singh Chautala said that the government might take a u-turn on its announcement later. The State Government only makes announcement and does nothing, he alleged.

A day before, the State Government had decided to conduct indirect elections for college/university student union, fulfilling a long pending demand of the students.

The decision was taken in a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Manohar lal  while reviewing functioning of Higher Education Department.

Following this, Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma had said that the BJP has fulfilled its pre-poll promise by taking this decision.

Notably, the last students’ union election in Haryana was held nearly two decades ago. The elections to the student bodies were banned by the then chief minister, Bansi lal, in 1996 in view of the unruly and violent behavior of some students group at that time.

Even as students’ union election remained a major poll issue in the state, the ban was not lifted during the INlD rule as well as Congress regime in Haryana.
