Oppn hits out at Govt for increase in crime rate

Following the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) report revealing an increase in the crime rate in Haryana, the Opposition parties have launched a scathing attack on Manohar lal Khattar Government in the state.

Indian National lok Dal and Congress on Friday accused the BJP led Haryana Government of making false claims and alleged that the Government has failed to curb the increasing crime rate.

While expressing concern over the statistics of crime in Haryana in 2016 revealed in the NCRB report, leader of opposition and INlD’s senior leader Abhay Singh Chautala strongly criticized the Chief Minister and said that the government should come out of its mindset of celebrating the birth anniversaries and festivals and take effective steps to improve law and order situation in the state.

He said that by observing the NCRB data, it becomes clear that the small  state of Haryana is even lagging behind its neighboring Punjab in controlling crime. Chautala also expressed concern over the fact that despite BJP’s slogan 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, Haryana is becoming an insecure state for women.

While 9010 cases of crime against women were registered in the year 2014, it increased to 9511 in 2015 and 9839 cases in 2016.  There has also been a huge increase in the incidents of rape, said Chautala while quoting the NCRB report.

last year, 1187 incidents of rape were reported in Haryana, he added.

Similarly, figures of crimes committed against dalits are also increasing. There were 475 such cases in 2014 which increased to 510 in 2015, but in 2016 it has increased to 639, the INlD leader said.

When compared to Punjab, where 123, 147 and 132 cases were registered in those same years, it is definitely a matter of shame for Haryana. Four deaths have also been reported in the state due to inter-state conflict, added the leader of opposition.

Chautala also expressed concern over the fact that in pursuing successful hearings in the courts of crimes against women, Haryana is again far behind Punjab.

Whereas in Punjab 24.3% of the accused are punished, only 13.4% of the accused in Haryana are being punished, added he. The government's biggest failure on law and order scenario is seen in the figures of NCRB report, according to which 79947 crime cases were registered in 2014, 84,446 cases were registered in year 2015 and 8,8527 cases were registered in the year 2016, said he.

According to the NCRB report, Haryana stayed at the fourth rank across India as it was in 2015 in crime data.

The worst performance of Haryana was in cases of communal rioting as it is ranked at the top in the country with 250 such cases being registered in 2016.
