Opp resents short session

Published on:

The Opposition parties—Indian National Lok Dal and Congress—on Friday expressed unhappiness over the short duration of monsoon session of Haryana Assembly.

The session, which formally commenced on Friday, has just three days and four sittings for the business. The session started at 2 pm on Friday and was adjourned after obituary references as a mark of respect to departed souls.

The Business Advisory Committee of Haryana Assembly which met on Friday morning decided that the session will continue till September 11, which will see double sittings and single sitting on September 10.

After the meeting, Chief Minister Manohar Lal said it has been decided that session would continue till September 11. We are hopeful that discussions would be held on key issues and the session would be productive, he said.

Leader of opposition in Haryana Assembly and Indian National Lok Dal’s senior leader Abhay Chautala said that the session has been extended by only one sitting. We had demanded that session should be of five to seven days so that all MLAs could be given time to raise issues of their assembly constituencies, he said.

There are indications that the assembly polls of Haryana would be held alongwith Lok Sabha polls later this year. In such scenario, this is the last Assembly session of this government, hence we demanded its extension, he said.

The INLD will move eight adjournment motion and atleast six calling attention motion in the monsoon session.

The party has decided to raise issues of deteriorating law and order situation and increase in crime against women and girls, Sutlej Yamuna Link canal, Dadupur Nalvi project, GST impact on traders, non-implementation of Swaminathan report, e-trading affecting farmers, problem of government employees, declining standard of education and health facilities in Haryana, death of cattle in gaushalas, illegal mining among other issues.

The INLD will also raise the issue of Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s brother-in-law Robert-Vadra-owned Skylight Hospitality, Omkareshwar Properties and DLF that were facilitated by the connivance of the then Haryana Government under Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

On the other hand, Kiran Choudhry, Leader of the Haryana Congress Legislature Party said that time is not enough to discuss various key issues of Haryana. The party will raise issues of SYL canal, Dadupur Nalvi irrigation project, employees’ strike, MSP of crops and scam in procurement of mustard, she said.

The opposition parties have also been asking the State Government to bring an ordinance to protect the interests of the employees affected by Punjab and Haryana High Court order, setting aside the provision for regularising the services of contractual employees. Nearly 4600 employees are affected due to the HC order.

The State Government has submitted to the Assembly Secretariat seven Bills for legislation.

Notably, the monsoon session was to earlier begin on August 17 but was postponed due to the death of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
