Noose tightens on habitual traffic offenders

Published on:

Despite regular traffic awareness drives by Chandigarh Traffic Police, the number of habitual traffic offenders on roads is on the rise.

Several traffic awareness campaigns, including theatre skit to observe Traffic awareness week, Road shows and Biker’s stunt rallies, all efforts of traffic police seem to have gone futile as the names of 37 driving license holders have been sent to the licensing authority for suspension in eight months, this year.

Records of Chandigarh Traffic Police revealed that cases of habitual offenders have increased. In 2011, traffic police had sent 23 names for license cancellation to the licensing authority, while the number increased to 35 in 2012. The awareness exercise got a jolt this year with four months still to go as traffic police have already sent 37 names for the license suspension.

SSP of Traffic and Security, Maneesh Chowdhary said “Usually the license is cancelled for six months but considering the grievous traffic offences, it can also be cancelled permanently. Driving vehicles negligently on the road can cause danger to other commuters also, hence those who are being challaned must not take it lightly.”
