A group of Nihangs from various organisations on Tuesday extended their support to the Punjab Congress, expressing their faith in the leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh.
led by Karan Warring, the Nihangs, hailing from Halka Dakha (ludhiana), met the Punjab Congress president to convey their solidarity with him ahead of the state Assembly elections.
Capt Amarinder assured the Nihangs that his party, once in power, would look into their pending demands, which include a free and fair inquiry into the desecration of Guru Granth Sahib in Bargadi, as well as probe into incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahin in various parts of the state. The Punjab Congress chief expressed concern at such incidents and promised action against those found guilty after a thorough investigation.
The Nihangs, in their list of demands submitted to Captain Amarinder, said that baptized Sikhs working in government or private organisations should have the liberty to wear their religious clothing and items, and should also be allowed to keep their bears untied, as per their religious customs.
No political interference in religious affairs is another key demand of the Nihangs.
