The National Human Right Commissions has sought a report from the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, Karnal regarding the lathi charge on farmers on August 28 at Bastara toll plaza in Karnal.
Four weeks time has been given to them to submit the report to NHRC.
The NHRC while acting on the complaint submitted by the Haryana Congress into the incident has issued notice to both Karnal DC and SP.
A delegation of Haryana Congress leaders led by state party in-charge Vivek Bansal had submitted a memorandum to NHRC on August 31 regarding Karnal incident. The Congress had demanded registration of a case and strict action against those who are guilty of the lathi charge on farmers. At least 15 farmers were injured in the incident.
Haryana Congress chief Kumari Selja has welcomed the move of the NHRC and said that she was hopeful that this step will pave the way for justice to the farmers.
Selja said that a Congress delegation had met the NHRC two days ago regarding the lathi charge on farmers and put everything before the Commission including a pen drive, media reports and also submitted a memorandum requesting to grant justice to the farmers.
The Congress party had demanded that strictest action should be taken against the criminals, who carried out this lathi charge and cases should be registered against them, she added.
She also alleged whatever happened on August 28 in Karnal was already decided by the Haryana government and the Karnal Administration that the farmers would be lathi charged.
Referring to the viral video of the then Karnal sub-divisional magistrate Ayush Sinha instructing policemen to “crack the heads” of farmers at the protest in Karnal, Selja said that it can be imagined that when officers use such an attitude, it cannot be done without the government's support. In Kurukshetra, Hisar, Sirsa, Palwal and Karnal, the blood of farmers was shed, who were raising their voices peacefully, she added.
