Specialists on Neurology, especially Dr Itender Singh, from Department of Neurological Surgery, Washington University School of Medicine,USA has stressed on the need to develop some treatment for Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease as their occurrence has increased all over the world.
The Neurologists were participating in a brain storming session on microbiological avenues in biomedical sciences organised by Department of Microbiology along with AMI-Rohtak Unit, at Seminar Hall, Department of Microbiology, Mahrishi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak on Saturday.
Dr Itender Singh, an alumni of the MDU, said that till date there is no drug that can stop neuro-degeneration and memory loss. Dementia and Alzheimer’s are irrereversible diseases. Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behaviour. He also shared his knowledge about the new avenues in the pathogenesis of sepsis, stroke and dementia disease and their diagnosis.
His research at US has brought significant understanding about the neurodegenerative diseases. Through his research he deciphered the complete mechanism of development of neuro degerative diseases, especially dementia and Alzeimer’s disease. Based on his research his group has come up with two potential molecules which can stop the progression of the disease. These molecules are Activated protein C(APC) and FPS-ZM1 which are in the phase III of the clinical trials.
Dr Kiran Bala Professor and Head, Department of Neurology, PGIMS, Rohtak spoke about brain stroke and ischemic stroke and stressed on regular blood pressure check ups to ensure good health of the brain. She also said that we need more of research in neurobiology to help the medical practitioners to treat such condition The brain storming session was attended by faculty and students of Department of Microbiology, Biotechnology and allied branches of life sciences.
