Taking serious cognisance of the “brutal” torture and death of an Amritsar-based factory worker by his employers, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes on Sunday directed the police authorities to arrest alleged culprits.

The video of brutal torture and death of Ram Singh by his employers in a factory in the Focal Point area, four days back, gone viral on Saturday. The video shocked the residents of the city. The victim was hung upside down, with his hands and feet tied with a rope and was brutally beaten by the accused with rods and sticks.

Ram Singh, who hailed from Nepal and had been residing in Amritsar since last 16 years, was brutally tortured and hung upside down by his employers who accused him of theft. During the torture he died and his body was dumped on Mehta road by his employers, who had accused him of stealing money from the factory.

As no arrests have so far being made in the matter, the Commission vice-chairman Raj Kumar Verka summoned the DCP Harpreet Singh and ADCP Harwinder Singh. The two police officers, while appearing before Verka here on Sunday, assured that the alleged culprits would be arrested very soon.

Verka said that this ‘Taliban style’ torture was a very serious offence for which the strict possible punishment should be handed out to the alleged culprits.

He also appealed to the Supreme Court and the Punjab and Haryana High Court to monitor the trial in this case after the alleged culprits were arrested.

The police had booked three persons, one of whom has been identified as Jaspreet Singh, a resident of New Focal Point and two other unidentified persons in this regard under sections 302 (murder), 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on the complaint deceased’s wife.
