Even before former MP Navjot Singh Sidhu became a part of Team Congress, party’s Punjab unit chief Capt Amarinder Singh on Thursday declared that the cricketer-turned-politician would bat for the Congress from Amritsar East assembly segment, currently represented by his wife Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu.
“Navjot Singh Sidhu will contest from the constituency of his wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu,” Capt Amarinder told the media in New Delhi. He said that Sidhu will contest from Amritsar East seat as a Congress nominee.
A day before, Dr Navjot Kaur had clear the air on Sidhu stating that the former cricketer is in regular touch with the Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh.
She had maintained that meetings have taken place with the Congress top brass and they are preparing an itinerary for Sidhu and he will join Congress soon.
Sidhu and Capt Amarinder had met in Delhi last month and discussed the former’s plans for Punjab. Sidhu is likely to join the Congress any time now depending on his preference, Capt Amarinder had said.
The former MP had formally resigned from the BJP on September 14. Before that, on July 18, he had resigned from the Rajya Sabha seat to which he was nominated in April this year.
His wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu, an MlA from Amritsar (East), had also resigned from the BJP on October 8 and after which she also resigned from the Assembly.
