The “mastermind” Aam Aadmi Party’s lawmaker in Delhi Naresh Yadav was remanded in police custody for two days on Monday by Punjab’s local court in connection with a Quran sacrilege incident in Malerkotla in June.

Yadav was arrested by 12-member Punjab Police team on late Sunday evening in the national Capital from his Delhi office. At that time, Yadav was addressing the media.

His arrest came after the Malerkotla court issued arrest warrants in his name. On Monday, Yadav was presented in Malerkotla local court.

Going into background of the matter, main accused in the case Vijay Kumar had claimed that he was paid Rs1 crore by Yadav for the act. Vijay also recorded his statement last week before a magistrate.

AAP lawmaker was booked as a “mastermind” in the Quran sacrilege conspiracy following Vijay’s allegations.

During the investigations, the Police had questioned Yadav twice in connection with this case, once for over eight hours on July 9.  Mehrauli MlA and his party have denied the charges and alleged it to be a ‘political conspiracy’ to malign the party’s image ahead of the Punjab Assembly polls.

Sangrur police had arrested Vijay Kumar, Gaurav and Nand Kishore on charge of desecration of the Quran saying that they belonged to the right-wing Hindu organisation Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

Yadav claimed he had nothing to do with the incident and was being falsely implicated for political reasons.
