Mohinder Singh resignation: Cong files complaint with Speaker

Published on:

Seeking immediate notification of the resignation of Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu from the membership of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha in the Gazette, the Congress on Thursday filed a complaint with the Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal.

In his complaint, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) vice-president and Chamkaur Sahib MlA Charanjit Singh Channi  also urged the Speaker to forward a copy thereof to the Election Commission of India enabling it to take appropriate steps to fill up the vacancy.

“Neither the said event has been notified in the Gazette nor the copy has been sent to the Election Commission for further necessary action till date, as required by law,” stated Channi in his complaint, the copy of which has also been sent to the Chief Election Commissioner. Former Congress MlA from Talwandi Sabo, Sidhu resigned as an MlA after joining hands with the Akali Dal on March 7, when the House was in session.

''As required under Rule 51 (5) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, his resignation was accepted and announced by the Speaker in the House on that very day,” he said adding that this led to the seat falling vacant.
