The much-awaited first mayoral election of Mohali Municipal Corporation was put off on Tuesday following a clash between the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Congress supporters outside the MC headquarters. Sources said that the Congress and SAD members, who accused each other of horse trading, clashed with each other. Some of the members were also roughed up during the clash.
There are reports of stone-pelting during clash. The police also resorted to a minor cane charge to disperse the protesters. Many were injured. Slogans were also shouted against Punjab Government by the Congress members. The independents and Congress members also held a protest against the SAD-BJP Government. The first mayoral election was being held on the directions of Punjab and Haryana High Court as none of political parties have a clear majority. Out of a total 49 municipal councillors, 11 are independents.
