After remaining grounded for months following its launch in April, the mobile mammography van of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32 has finally become operational on Tuesday.
Ever since its inaugural trip in the month of April, the mobile mammography van purchased for Rs 1.24 crore had remained grounded at GMCH-32. The mobile mammography van (MMV) meant to travel through the city to detect breast cancer and osteoporosis (disease of bones) at an early stage, was launched with much fanfare by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj Patil on April 12.
However, after its maiden trip, the MMV was not put into operation due to technical problems in van and staff crunch at GMCH-32.
After a gap of over three months, the MMV has now finally become operational. For, a breast cancer detection and Dexa scan cum awareness camp was held at UHTC – 44 B (Urban Health Training Center) of GMCH–32 on Tuesday. And, the screening was done via MMV of GMCH-32.
Around 25 beneficiaries were screened for Dexa scanning and 6 females of age group more than 40 years were subjected to mammography in the screening camp.
Home-cum-Health Secretary Anil Kumar was present during the screening camp. Kumar said MMV is a good venture by GMCH for screening females for breast cancer and for bone density at the door step. Health Secretary also suggested to involve NGOS for generating awareness and doing camps in and around Chandigarh.
