MlAG seeks Rs11.6 crore in compensation to murdered doctor's next of kin

The Medicos legal Action Group has demanded a compensation of Rs11.6 crore for parents of Dr Sarita Toshniwal, who was killed in a medical college in Assam. MlAG condemned the barbaric murder of Dr Sarita Toshniwal, a first-year Obstetrics and Gynaecology Resident, in the ICU of Assam Medical College and Hospital.

Dr Neeraj Nagpal, convener of MlAG said that junior resident doctors were the backbone of the nation’s hospitals. The murder exposed the rotten working conditions under which these young doctors worked.

These resident doctors suffered the most and are also ignored the most. They are the faceless medical soldiers at the forefront who do 24 hour duties, bear the brunt for patients not getting proper drugs, or treatment in terms of violence but are not provided proper living working conditions or security at the hospitals.

Dr Nagpal said MlAG will pursue the matter with the Assam hospital to get suitable compensation for death of the young doctor on duty who was the only child of her parents. Dr M C Gupta member of MlAG and ex-professor of medicine at AIIMS, said the residents work in inhuman conditions with 56 young doctors in Mumbai Government hospitals contracting Tuberculosis in 2013 leading to two deaths.
