After a Government veterinary lab has claimed that biryani samples collected from Mewat contained beef, Haryana Government has decided to continue the exercise of collecting samples of biryani.
The biryani samples collected by Police and animal husbandry department officials from meat-sellers across Mewat in Haryana have been found positive for beef, said Dr Shrikant Sharma, vice-chancellor of the lala lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Hisar.
Confirming the development, Haryana senior Minister Anil Vij while talking to the mediapersons on Friday said that the concerned officers have been asked to take action as per the law. Strict action will be taken against violators by the State Government as beef consumption is banned in Haryana, he said.
Anil Vij also defended the action claiming that it was their duty.
“They (police) are in charge of implementing the law. It is part of their duty to check that beef is not consumed, as it is illegal in the state,” said the Minister.
Cow slaughter and consumption of beef is a criminal offence in Haryana. last year, the government had enforced Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gau Samvardhan Act 2015 making cow slaughter punishable with rigorous imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine of `1 lakh.
Meanwhile, leader of opposition and INlD’s senior leader Abhay Singh Chautala has alleged that BJP-led Haryana Government is raising the issue of beef only to divide the communities and disturb peace in the state.
The CPI-M has also condemned the move by the Haryana government to
collect samples of Biriyani in Mewat area ahead of Bakri-Id festival.
