Ashish Dahiya, Head, Hotel and Tourism Department of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), was shot at by a youth in his office on the university campus here on Monday. Though the security personnel sealed all exit points of the university after the incident, they failed to nab the attacker.
Dahiya has been admitted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Pt BD Sharma PGIMS here where his condition is stated to be critical. The crime was perpetrated in the morning when Dahiya was sitting alone in his office on the new campus of the university.
The armed youth barged into the office and opened three rounds of fire upon him from a close range. While one round missed the target, two bullets pierced through Dahiya’s stomach. The attacker managed to escape, said police. Hearing the sound of gunshots, other faculty members and the students rushed to the office and found Dahiya lying in a pool of blood.
They immediately took him to casualty ward of the PGIMS where doctors had to carry out emergency surgery. Haryana Police arrested a student involved in firing gunshots at the Director, of Hotel Management, MDU Rohtak late in the evening.
A spokesman of the Police Department said that the accused had been identified as Vedendra. During preliminary investigation, it was found that the student was upset as he was to reappear in exam. The police will produce the accused in court on Tuesday.
