Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati will visit the city to address a rally for BSP candidate Jannat Jahan on March 30. BSP candidate Jahan is wife of Chandigarh BSP leader Anwar Hul Haq and municipal councillor from Chandigarh.
Addressing mediapersons on Monday, Jahan said that Mayawati will be in Chandigarh on March 30 to address a party rally in her favour. She said that she will fill her nomination paper on March 18. About her winning prospects in the polls, she said she stands a good chance to win the elections in Chandigarh. At present, the BJP and Congress is suffering from their own internal fights and that is the reason that they have not even announced their candidates till now.
“Six people from Congress and many from BJP have been eyeing party’s ticket from the city in elections,” she added.
lashing out at Congress local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal, Jahan alleged that Bansal is flooded with allegations of corruption which are now known by everybody. If Congress again gives ticket to him then their double face will be uncovered, she said.
“The new entrant, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is also suffering from factionalism. Their candidate Savita Bhatti has already opted out from contesting elections due to this,” she added.
Jannat said that BSP is the only party with transparency. She said that women’s safety, development of every section of society, employment opportunities and education will be her priority if people elected her as MP.
The polling in Chandigarh will be held on April 10.According to the party senior leaders, BSP already has a strong hold in the villages and colonies of the city so their focus will be to garner support of voters from other sections of the city.
Earlier, Mayawati had visited the city in 2009 lok Sabha polls to address a rally in favor of party’s candidate Harmohan Dhawan, who had joined BJP later. At that time, Mayawati had tried to reach out to the Sikh voters of the city. Well versed with the Sikh population in the city, she had raised the issue of 1984 riots and had also assured the community that she will bring the justice to the affected Sikh families, if comes to power.
In last lok Sabha polls, BSP candidate Harmohan Dhawan had got 61434 votes, remaining at the third slot in the voting percentile. This time, Jahan hopes to win the constituency seat with the support of villages, colonies, Government employees and lower middle class in the city.
