Ludhiana West Bypoll: Claims, Objections on Electoral Roll Open Till Apr 24, says CEO

Published on:

As Ludhiana West gears up for its crucial by-election, Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sibin C on Sunday announced that the process for special summary revision of the photo electoral roll is currently underway. Citizens of the 64-Ludhiana West Assembly Constituency can file claims and objections regarding the draft electoral roll until April 24, 2025, with April 1, 2025 as the qualifying date. The final voter list will be published on May 5.

The constituency has a total of 1,73,071 registered voters, and 192 polling stations have been finalized after scrutiny and approval from the Election Commission of India. All polling stations are located in urban areas, and each has been designed to accommodate no more than 1,200 voters for better accessibility and crowd management.

CEO Sibin C emphasized that coordination meetings have been held with representatives of recognized political parties. Many have already appointed their Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to assist in the revision process. Others have been urged to follow suit to ensure transparency and comprehensive voter inclusion. He also highlighted the legal provision for voters to appeal against Electoral Registration Officers' (ERO) decisions under Sections 22 and 23 of the Representation of the People Act.

Even though the Election Commission of India is yet to announce the bypoll dates, major political parties have already entered campaign mode, signaling the high political stakes. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora, while the Congress has nominated former Cabinet Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has announced senior advocate and former president of the Ludhiana Bar Association Parupkar Singh Ghumman as its candidate, setting the stage for a high-profile triangular contest.
