Syed Abdul Karim, alias Tunda, an alleged bomb maker of terror outfit lashkar-e-Taiba, was attacked in a Karnal jail by two inmates on Wednesday morning.

The two inmates reportedly tried to strangulate him but he was saved by the security personnel. Following the attack, Tunda was taken to the trauma centre for a medical check-up under high security and is said to fine now.

Tunda, who is accused of masterminding over 40 bombings in the country, was brought to the Karnal Jail on Tuesday evening following directions of the Panipat Court. He is to be produced again in the court on Thursday.

The leT terrorist was produced in a court of Panipat on Monday in connection with a bomb blast in a private bus in Panipat on February 1, 1997, killing a 10-year-old and leaving several other injured.

According to the prison officials, “The two inmates, Amandeep and Joginder, were taking tea with Tunda at around 9 am, when they tried to strangulate him. But the prompt action of the security personnel saved him”.

A case has been registered against the two inmates, who were from Panipat.

Director General, Prisons, Haryana, Yash Pal Singhal confirmed the incident and said that Tunda’s security inside the jail has been increased in the wake of the attack.

Tunda was arrested by the Delhi Police Special Cell at the Nepal-India border in 2013.
