Representatives of various khaps on Thursday demanded a ban on same-gotra marriages and urged the Haryana Government to raise the issue to make amendment to the Hindu Marriage Act.
The representatives of more than ten khaps reached the Haryana Chief Minister Manohar lal’s residence on Thursday demanding amendments in Hindu Marriage Act. While the representatives could not meet Chief Minister, they later submitted a memorandum demanding changes in the Act.
Talking to the mediapersons, the representatives of the Khaps said that they have demanded amendment in the Hindu Marriage Act to prohibit marriages in the same gothra (clan) and within the same village.
Gotra in Hindu society means clan meaning people who are descendants in an unbroken male line from a common male ancestor.
