Denying having any links with the smugglers and debunking these allegations as utterly false, “malicious and politically-motivated”, Punjab Congress leader and former Bholath MlA Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Tuesday said that he was ready to face any probe.
Khaira, daring the State Government to order a judicial inquiry or a CBI probe to include my role, if any, and that of Bikram Majithia in the drug racket, alleged a conspiracy to defame him.
He alleged Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, DGP Sumedh Singh Saini, and Akali MlA Bibi Jagir Kaur troika “want to ruin his political career”.
Khaira, while addressing the media a day after the Punjab Police, claimed of arresting eight drug peddlers including its mastermind and “Khaira’s aide” Gurdev Singh alias chairman.
The police also maintained that both Gurdev and Khaira spoken to each other telephonically on 78 occasions in past 11 months.
Even Khaira had assured Gurdev to help him in resolving the matter and Khaira also pleaded for him with DIG (Ferozepur Range) and IGP (Bathinda Zone) on March 4.
Defending, Khaira admitted that Gurdev Singh was his “known political supporter”, but “I completely deny even an iota of knowledge or information of his dealings in drugs or any such activities”.
“Gurdev Singh is seriously affected by Hepatitis-B virus for the last two years and out of courtesy, I enquired about his health,” said Khaira.
He said that the Badal clan have been wrecked and devastated by my direct attacks on them and are finding such frivolous issues to fix me and ruin my political career.
“I challenge Badal Government that if it has the courage, let it order an impartial independent probe by either a sitting judge of the High Court or a CBI inquiry to ascertain my role if any and that of Bikram Majithia into the drug scandal,” he said.
