Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Tuesday said that he was seized of the reported violence against the Dalit Sikhs in Shillong, and he was keeping a tab on the situation.
The Chief Minister said that as per the reports received by him from the delegation, led by Cabinet Minister Sukjinder Singh Randhawa, there was no damage of any kind to any Gurdwara in Shillong.
The delegation was satisfied with the steps taken by the Meghalayan government to control the situation, he added.
The four-member Punjab delegation on Tuesday met Hima Mylliem, the Syiem of Mylliem, to seek expediting the resolution of the disputed land case which was at the centre of the current trouble in Shillong.
The case is pending with Syiem of Mylliem, and Randhawa said that he and other team members had impressed upon him the need to expedite the matter in order to defuse the prevailing tension.
The team, which has been sent by Capt Amarinder to make a ground assessment of the situation, visited the Gurdwara to ascertain if any damage had been inflicted on it. Randhawa said that they had not found any damage and expressed concerned about rumours to the contrary, spread by vested interests in an apparent bid to trigger communal strife in the area.
