All India Jat Aarkashan Sanghrash Samiti (AIJASS) will organise a Jat Mahapanchayat in Jassia village of Rohtak district on June 2 to decide on the next phase of agitation over their long-pending demands, including reservation for the Jat community.
The police force in Haryana has been put on high alert in view of the Jat Mahapanchayat, which will be attended by the Jat leaders from various states. Rohtak was the epicenter of 2016 violent Jat agitation.
Haryana DGP BS Sandhu has said that state police is fully prepared to deal with the situation and adequate arrangements have been made to maintain law and order.
The AIJASS had recently expressed strong displeasure over Haryana Government’s stand on not withdrawing cases against members of the Jat community languishing in jails related to the February 2016 violence and had announced to renew its agitation.
“At Jat Mahapanchayat, discussions will be held on the next phase of agitation over our demands,” said AIJASS president Yashpal Malik.
He has also announced to launch a nationwide agitation on the issue of reservation for community members in government jobs and admission in educational institutions.
The AIJASS leader had hit out at the State Government for submitting in the Punjab and Haryana High Court that it would not withdraw cases registered during the 2016 Jat reservation stir at least till July 11, the next date of hearing in the case.
Notably, the Jat agitation in February 2016 had left 31 people dead and more than 200 injured in Haryana.
After this, the Manohar lal Khattar government had buckled under pressure by giving 10 percent reservation to Jats and five other communities. However, the move was stayed by the Court.
The Jat community had then again held protests in various parts of Haryana last year but called it off following several rounds of parleys in New Delhi between the senior BJP leaders and Jat leaders.
Both sides had reached a consensus on issues, including initiation of the process of reservation for the Jats in central government jobs, general amnesty for those booked during the February 2016 Jat quota violence, reconsideration of criminal cases lodged against Jat agitators since 2010 and permanent jobs to next-of-kin of those killed and those maimed during the 2016 Jat agitation in Haryana.
Besides, the State Government had assured to give monetary compensation to the injured and institute probe against officers accused of high-handedness during the Jat stir 2016.
