Jaitley, Capt exchange barbs over Humpty Dumpty

Published on:

Equating his Congress rival and former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh with “Humpty Dumpty”, the SAD-BJP candidate from Amritsar Arun Jaitley on Wednesday made it clear that the ‘Patiala Royal’ was giving meaning to words which suited him.

Alluding to the fable of Alice in Wonderland and Humpty Dumpty, Jaitley pointed out that Capt Amarinder was coming up with his own interpretation to the statements he has given on the issues of property tax and Congress leader Jagdish Tytler’s involvement in 1984 riots.

“The Captain has chosen to call me a “third rate liar”, since I alleged that he, under whose signatures, approved the proposal for property tax in urban Punjab and given an undertaking to the Central Government...He now comes out with the most fascinating explanation that it was the Chief Secretary who did it on his own,” wrote Jaitley in his campaign dairy on Wednesday.

He stated, “I have produced a written note sheet signed by Capt Amarinder Singh on December 7, 2006, undertaking to the Central Government that the property tax will be levied in urban Punjab as a condition precedent for receiving Central grants for urban renewal. But when Humpty Dumpty signs on a proposal, he means only that he intends to be.”

“When he says that Jagdish Tytler is not involved in 1984 riots, he means that he is not giving him a clean chit,” quipped Jaitley, adding that there was a place for Humpty Dumpty in fiction and not in real life.

‘Jaitley ending up as Majithia’s Guinea pig’

Amritsar: Former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Wednesday took a dig at his SAD-BJP rival candidate Arun Jaitley’s “childish fascination for children’s literature that too at the time of elections”.

“It is difficult to make out what actually haunts Jaitley, the national issues as he loves to claim he is fond of raising and discussing or the character from a children’s book”, he remarked. Referring to Jaitley comparing him with Humpty Dumpty character in lewis Carroll’s children’s classic series Alice in Wonderland, Capt Amarinder remarked, looking at his interests and inclination, he had stopped taking offence for whatever he says or comments about him.

“I really feel sad for the man as he is helplessly ending up as a Guinea Pig of Bikram Majithia,” remarked Capt Amarinder about Jaitley. “I am pleasantly amused at Jaitely’s choice of books he is reading during the election time or ideas and thoughts that have been haunting him at this stage...No wonder, he takes childish offence for anything and everything that is said about him no matter what he speaks about others,” he added.

The former chief minister remarked, no doubt lewis Carroll’s series makes a wonderful reading but sounds out of place at this time, amidst the din and sound of elections.
