Five policemen were reportedly beaten up after being held hostage by infuriated people in Chhara village here on Saturday when they had gone there to round up two youths in connection with a charas smuggling case.

They were freed after a large number of police personnel reached the village and pacified the villagers who later accused the policemen of demanding bribe after threatening the youths’ kin of implicating them in the crime.

Taking a serious note of the allegations, Jhajjar SP Balwan Singh has ordered an official inquiry into the matter besides transferring the cops to police lines. According to the information, the police had earlier apprehended two youths of Chhara village in connection with the case while arrived in the village to detain two others for questioning.

As soon as the cops started inquiry about the youths, they were made hostage by the villagers in a house. Some of the villagers allegedly beat them up too when they resisted the villagers’ action, said the sources.

The Bahadurgarh DSP along with heavy police force rushed to the village on getting information and got the cops freed. “An inquiry has been ordered to investigate serious allegations levelled by the villagers against the cops,” said the Jhajjar SP, who denied any manhandling by the villagers with the cops.
