Haryana cadre IPS officer Sharad Kumar has been appointed as the new chief of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). A 1979-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Sharad is presently director general (Prisons) in Haryana.
Sharad Kumar will take over from IPS officer NR Wasan, who was given the charge of NIA in April following appointment of incumbent SC Sinha as member of National Human Rights Commission. NIA was set up to tackle terrorism-related incidents in the country. It came into existence after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.
