Indian Army selection centre set up

The Indian Army has set up a selection centre here with a view to selecting officers for the armed forces. This is the fourth such centre in the country, said a defence statement on Friday.

The centre, set up by the Indian Army's Service Selection Board, is around 175 km from the State capital Chandigarh. It will cater to the job aspirants of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh and Jammu and Kashmir. These northern states, according to last year's figure, constitute over 24 per cent of the total cadets who became officers. Inaugurating the centre, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Western Command lt. Gen. KJ Singh said: "It was a long-pending demand of Punjab for selection centre because the aspirants from the northern states had to visit Bhopal, Allahabad and Bengaluru to appear before the Special Selection Board."
