IGP Karnal as controlling officer of Ambala district

Published on:

After taking out Ambala of the Ambala-Panchkula Commissionerate and restoring the old system of policing in the district, Haryana Government has issued orders to appoint IGP Karnal range as the controlling officer of the district.

“IGP Karnal range will look after Ambala district as controlling officer till the Government appoints another officer for the district,” as per the orders. After ending the Commissionerate system in Ambala, the Government had been considering to shift Karnal police range back to Ambala from where it was shifted at the time of creation of the commissionerate. However, there were apprehensions on the proposal with Karnal being Chief Minister Manohar lal Khattar’s home constituency.

Earlier, the Ambala-Panchkula Commissionerate was being looked after by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP)-rank officer. The Panchkula-Ambala Commissionerate came into being on August 9, 2011 under Bhupinder Singh Hooda led Haryana Government.

As per the new plan, the police is headed by an SP in Ambala, like other districts of the state, and the Commissioner of Police (CP).

Notably, Cabinet Minister and Ambala Cantonment MlA Anil Vij was against the commissionerate system and had also written to the CM to review the system saying that the army of police officials under this system was a “financial burden” on the state exchequer.
