Days after a Muslim boy had alleged of being beaten by a group of men in Gurugram for wearing skull cap, Haryana Police on Wednesday claimed that the investigation into the incident that took place on intervening night of May 25 and 26 revealed that there was no deliberate attempt to disrupt communal harmony.

“Rather it was a criminal offence by two drunkards,” said Haryana Police in a statement issued regarding the incident.

A Muslim man, Mohammad Barkat Alam, 25 had alleged that he was  beaten by a group of men at Jacubpura in Gurugram on May 25 night after he was told to remove his skullcap and chant Jai Shri Ram.

A spokesman of Police Department said that immediately after receiving the complaint, local Police had rushed to the spot and started investigation after recording the statement of the victim. A FIR under sections 147/149/153-A/323 and 506 of Indian Penal code was also registered in City Police Station Gurugram.

He said that thorough investigation was conducted by a Police team under the direct supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police West, Gurugram. CCTV footage of a large number of cameras from the area of incident was taken. One CCTV footage had captured the entire incident and the same was examined in Digital Investigation, Training and Analysis Centre (DITAC) laboratory.

The footage of the incident had not fully supported the allegation leveled by the victim Mohammad Barkat Alam. In the footage only one accused person is seen assaulting the victim. As informed by the victim, the accused person was a drunkard. Police has also conducted investigation at nearby liquor vends, shops and business establishment, the spokesman said.

Some sweepers, visible in CCTV footage, were joined in the investigation. Assistance from cyber experts has been taken to analyse the mobile phone calls dump details of the area. Apart from this, eminent persons from both the communities have been requested for help in identifying the accused, he added.

Meanwhile, Police has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the supervision of DCP West, Gurugram Sumer Singh to conduct thorough investigation into this case and to crack it at the earliest possible.

Gurugram Commissioner of Police, Mohd. Akil who is also monitoring the investigation, has assured the victim and other members about thorough investigation and strict action against the culprits.

Police has got some significant leads during the investigation and the accused will be nabbed soon. Nobody would be allowed to disrupt the peace and take law in his own hands, Akil said.

Notably, the incident of Muslim man being allegedly beaten up for wearing skull cap in Gurugram had evoked strong reactions. Reacting strongly to the incident, newly elected BJP MP from East Delhi-Gautam Gambhir had called the act deplorable and had called for immediate action from the police.
