Haryana, known for its skewed sex ratio, has registered 949 rape cases and 95 gang rape cases till August this year.
Moreover, 10158 cases of crime against women have been registered in the state during the same period, as per the data of Haryana State Crime Record Bureau. The state had registered 1328 cases of rape in the year 2017, which averages to more than three rapes a day.
Lashing out at the Haryana Government for deteriorating law and order situation, Haryana Leader of opposition and INLD’s senior leader Abhay Chautala on Friday said that ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign of the BJP Government is a mere slogan.
Referring to the data of Haryana State Crime Record Bureau, Chautala while talking to the mediapersons here said that it is shameful that 949 cases of rapes, which averages to more than three rapes a day have been registered in the state till August this year. 95 cases of gang rapes have also been registered as the State Government continues to fail in curbing crime against women in Haryana, he alleged.
According to the Haryana State Crime Record Bureau, 20 gang rapes have been registered in the month of August in the state. Recently, the Rewari gang-rape case had evoked sharp reaction from opposition parties.
According to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) 2016 report, the rape rate in Haryana is 9.4 against the national average of 6.1. Haryana has also earned the dubious distinction of topping the country in the number of gang rapes. A total of 191 gang rapes took place in the state in 2016, or one every two days, as per NCRB 2016 report.
Quoting the data of Haryana State Crime Record Bureau, Chautala said that 2461 cases of crime against children, 403 cases of crime against scheduled caste have also been registered from January to August 2018.
He alleged that there is a general sense of insecurity among women, dalits and children in the state.
During the same time period, 665 cases of murder, 571 cases of attempt to commit murder, 2673 cases of kidnapping and abduction, 220 dacoity, 486 robbery, 4566 of criminal trespass/burglary, 1498 of riots, 159 of arson have been registered during the same time period. A huge 15062 cases of theft have also been registered till August this year.
