High technology needed to ensure jails’ security: Min

Punjab Jails Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa on Thursday emphasized the adoption of new techniques aimed at the upgradation of the sensors inside the jails and the CCTV cameras.

“The ultra modern technology is the need of the hour to ensure internal as well as the external security of the jails so as to avoid any untoward incident,” said Randhawa after a meeting with ADGP Kuldeep Singh and IG Prisons RK Arora.

The meeting also saw the presentation by the Jail Department in which a private firm’s strategy adopted for the security of 70 jails in Uttar Pradesh was showcased. It was shown that the Jail Department can be alerted in advance by keeping strict vigil through CCTVs before the miscreants cause any mischief.

The entire system is based on the interference pattern of infrared radiations which can track the physical movements of the inmates which in turn would come in handy to ascertain if they are planning any violent activity.

Randhawa said that the Jail Department and the Punjab Police must ensure the security of jails by coordinating amongst themselves. “The Punjab Police would handle the ‘mulaqat area’, and the inner barracks and cells as well as inner boundary walls would be administered by the Jail Department,” said the Minister.

The Minister also emphasized keeping the jails neat and clean and planting fruit bearing saplings to be tendered by the inmates.
