Ahead of the New Year eve celebrations, the Chandigarh Police have planned tight and elaborate security arrangements to ensure that no untoward incident takes place in the night.
Sukhchain Singh Gill, Senior Superintendent of police said 1,500 constables, including 400 lady constables and about 200 volunteers of Home Guards, will patrol Chandigarh from 6.30 pm onwards on December 31 till late night. Besides this, hundreds of policemen in civil dress will also be deployed for mobile patrolling to monitor the revelers from vantage points in public areas to spot trouble-makers and detain them, he added.
The SSP said that special attention will be given to the happening places frequented by people, including Elante Mall, Sector 17 plaza, Sector 35 and Sector 22 areas. As per the security plan for New Year’s Eve, 35 checkposts would be erected by Chandigarh Police while 33 check posts will be erected by various police posts and police stations. This apart, 58 Police Control Room vehicles (PCR) would be on regular vigil in the city.
The police have identified 47 hotels in the city limits where the celebrations would take place for regular police patrolling. Officials said owners of discotheques have also been given instructions to shut down their events by 2 am. PCR patrolling have been asked to remain vigilant to keep eye on the miscreants outside and around the clubs. “The idea is to prevent eve-teasing and ensure that nobody is able to forcibly enter a club or any hotel. Stern action would be taken against those found indulging in eve teasing,” added Gill.
