The healthcare system in the Union Territory of Chandigarh has witnessed significant improvement in the last four years. Chandigarh—the joint Capital of Punjab and Haryana has scored a perfect 100 for providing heathcare facilities in the villages, according to the district-level households and facility survey-4 (DlHS-4).

Even as the higher number of anaemic population, low level of awareness of HIV/AIDS and the lack of proper breastfeeding practices in Chandigarh remains as a major setback for Chandigarh, the union territory has improved upon its tally from DlHS-3 (2007-08) in healthcare infrastructure in villages, as per the DlHS-4 conducted in 2012-13.

According to the DlHS-4 report released recently, the two Community Health Centres (CHCs) for its 24x7 hours normal delivery services, presence of Obstetrician, gynaecologist, anesthetist, functional operation theatre, first referral units, new-born care services on 24X7 hour basis has scored 100 per cent. In DlHS-3, the services were rated as 50 per cent in CHCs in most of the categories.

The healthcare services at one district hospital in villages scored 100 per cent. 85.7 per cent villages have accessibility to sub-health centre (SHCs) within 3 km while 92.7 per cent have Primary Heath Centre within 10 km, stated the survey.

In terms of health infrastructure in 28 sub-health centres (SHCs) located in the villages, the DlHS-4 stated that 60.9 per cent SHCs are located in government buildings, 52.2 per cent SHCs are with ANM (auxillary nurse midwife), 47.8 per cent SHCs have male heath worker and 27 per cent SHCs have additional ANM.

However, only 14 per cent of villages have accredited social heath activists while 78.6 per cent of villages have village heath nutrition and sanitation panel.
