HC issues notice to boxer Vijender over decision to turn 'professional'

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday issued a fresh notice to boxer Vijender Singh on his joining professional boxing league.

The notice, returnable on August 20, was issued by the bench comprising Justice SK Mittal and Justice HS Sidhu.

Taking cognizance of the news published with regard to his decision to turn pro and join the Queensbury Promotions Boxing league, the High Court had earlier issued notices to the state of Haryana and Vijender for July 24 terming the action that of  a pugilist and against the sports policy.

During the resumed hearing of the case on Friday, the Additional Advocate General, Haryana, appeared before the bench and sought three weeks period for filing a reply. As the notice had earlier issued through the DGP, Haryana, to the 2008 Olympic bronze medallist boxer and there was no response thereafter , the bench issued a fresh notice to him for August 20.

Haryana police had warned of taking action against the boxer if he fail to seek permission from the State Government to switch over to the professional league. Vijender was made DSP by Haryana Government after winning bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He is currently on probation and yet to complete his training. Being a Government employee, Vijender can neither shift to another job nor accept remuneration from any source without Government's permission.
