The Haryana Women Commission on Wednesday completely disassociated itself from the controversial statement given by its vice-chairperson Suman Dahiya, in which she said that prostitution should be legalised.

Kamlesh Panchal, chairperson of Haryana Women Commission on Wednesday said that the statement given by Suman Dahiya was her personal opinion and the Commission has nothing to do with that.

While addressing a Press conference on Wednesday, Panchal said that a reply has been sought from Dahiya for giving such statement.

Few days back, Suman Dahiya had said that prostitution should be legalised… It should be either legalised or entirely banned in the State. The Commission will write to the State Government in this regard. If the prostitution is legalised, the data of women involved in this should be collected, their medical should be conducted and various arrangements should be made for them, Dahiya had said.

Dahiya’s statement attacked criticism from various corners. Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij had also condemned the statement.

On the issue of prostitution, Panchal said that women should be provided employment opportunities so that prostitution could be stopped in the State.
