Haryana to set up Sports Injury Centre

Published on:

After announcing the sports policy in the State, Haryana Government is now gearing up to set up a state-of-art Sports Injury Centre for the treatment of sports injuries. The state-of-art Sports Injury Centre would be set up at the campus of PGIMS in Rohtak to provide round-the-clock world class treatment and rehabilitation services under one roof to the injured sportspersons.Dr OP Kalra, Vice-Chancellor, PGIMS said, “The process has been set rolling for setting up the centre with a budget of about Rs5 crore. During his recent visit to the University, Chief Minister Manohar lal had made the announcement for establishing a dedicated Sports Injury Centre.”

This is being done by upgrading the Orthopedic Department in collaboration with other departments at the PGIMS. The University also proposes to start a formal postgraduate training programme for Masters degree in Sports Medicine. A formal training program for MD in sports medicine is being run only in Guru Nanak Dev University at Amritsar. It is only last month that Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi also started this programme, said he.“A round-the-clock sports injury center providing world class facilities to injured sportsmen is the need of the hour. The move stems from the realization that an injured athlete needs more than incentive. For want of such facilities, injured sportsmen are left with no option but to rush to private and expensive hospitals in metros like Delhi and Mumbai or even abroad, for treatment,” Dr Kalra said.

The Centre will be in perfect sync with and supplement the sports policy of Haryana Government. Once such centre comes up, there will be no repeat of the tragic cases of a national hockey player from Punjab and a boxer from Haryana (Rohtak) sustaining head injuries on the field and losing the battle of life for want of treatment facilities, he added.Despite 226 stadia, some of global standards, sports academies and nurseries, Sports School like Rai, and having produced innumerable International and national medalists and sportspersons, Haryana has no separate, dedicated and specialized medical treatment faculty for treatment for persons having sports injuries and their complications. The state nurtures vibrant sports culture and has produced many outstanding player. Out of the total medals won by India in Olympics, Asiad and Commonwealth Games, about 30 to 40 per cent medals have been bagged by the sportsmen from Haryana.Only last week,  Sumit Nagal from Jhajjar District of Haryana, bagged the Wimbledon Boys Championship title in the recently concluded Wimbledon Grand Slam in UK.
