Haryana to release compensation to victims of 1984 riots

Haryana Government would soon release compensation to the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Pataudi and Gurgaon.

The one-man commission headed by retired Justice TP Garg had recommended Rs12.07 crore in compensation for the kin of victims in Gurgaon and Pataudi and damage to their properties.

As many as 36 people died in the riots at the two places.

The 300-page report of the commission of inquiry, constituted to probe incidents of violence during the 1984 riots in Pataudi and Gurgaon, was submitted to the Haryana Government on April 29.

Ram Niwas, Haryana additional chief secretary (Home) while talking to the mediapersons on Friday said that the State Government has accepted the Justice TP Garg Commission report and a request has been forwarded to the Finance Department to release the amount of Rs12  crore for compensation.

The compensation would be given to the victims soon, he added.

On the implementation of Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) project in the State, Ram Niwas said that the project would be implemented soon and under this, all police stations of the State will be connected through internet and specialised computer lab will be set up in all districts of the State.

The project envisages alternative modes of complaint registration like through Internet, e-mail, mobile phone, SMS and e-Disha Kendra. Besides, all other requests related to police services including verification through alternate IT-enabled modes would also be accepted.

Notably, Government auditor CAG has rapped Haryana Government for not completing CCTNS, which aims to modernise the police force. In its report for the year 2014-15, CAG said CCTNS has not been completed even after a lapse of three years.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has conceptualised CCTNS as a ‘mission mode project’ to modernise police force by enhancing outcomes in the areas of crime investigation and criminal detection, information gathering and its dissemination.
