Haryana Government would soon launch a drive to catch stray cattle in the State.

Earlier, 22,000 stray cattle were rounded up during a campaign carried out in the state from June 1 to 15. This campaign would now be conducted on even a bigger scale next month, said  Principal Secretary, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Abhilaksh likhi, who was presiding over a meeting of all Deputy Directors (Animal Husbandry), Sub-Divisional Officers and Veterinary Surgeons of Gurgaon Division on Monday.

He said that census of cattle in the state would be conducted in 2017, and the Department would make efforts to ensure that the cattle heads are tagged with 12-digit tags. A state-level meeting in this regard would be held this month, said he.

Notably, the issue of stray cattle was also raised in the recently concluded State Assembly. The state has a livestock population of 89.98 lakh, of which 18.08 lakh are cattle, as per 2012 census. Around 1.17 lakh out of these - 85,000 are in rural areas and 32,000 are in urban areas - are stray cattle.

Reiterating that the State Government i focused on promotion of indigenous breeds of cows and Murrah buffaloes,  likhi issued orders to the officers to spread awareness regarding artificial insemination among the cattle-breeders. In case of insufficient supply or delay in supply of cattle semen in semen banks, the district concerned should inform the headquarters immediately, he added.

He also directed the officers to prepare a list of buildings of veterinary hospitals and dispensaries requiring repair  or construction of new buildings, and get the non-functioning diagnostic machines repaired.

The State Government has also issued orders to display complete information about stock of medicines in Hindi outside all veterinary hospitals and dispensaries in the State, he added.
