Haryana Roadways employees threaten protest

Haryana Government and State roadways employees’ unions are at loggerheads again, this time over the issue of hiring of 700 private buses by the State Transport Department.

A day after the State Government announced that 700 private buses will soon ply in the state under its scheme of hiring of private buses on kilometer basis, the state roadways employees’ unions have demanded withdrawal of the decision.

The roadways employees’ unions have announced to go on protest if the State Government goes ahead with the hiring of private buses.

Agitated over the government’s decision, the roadways employees’ unions also boycotted the meeting convened by senior officers of State Transport Department on Friday to discuss the issue.

The Haryana cabinet had in April approved a scheme for hiring of private buses on kilometer basis by State Transport Department, aimed at reinforcing state’s bus fleet by enhancing the coverage and quality of bus services with hiring of new standard non AC buses on lease basis in the state. The decision to hire private buses was one of the major announcements made during state’s budget this year.

“The roadways unions will protest against the decision taken by the State Government for the privatization of Haryana roadways. The government should withdraw the decision of hiring 700 private buses in the state otherwise the roadways employees will go on protest,” said Haryana Roadways Workers Union, general secretary Sarbat Singh Punia while talking to The Pioneer.

Such decision will benefit only private operators and the state roadways will remain in losses, he said.

Punia said that the employees unions were called for a meeting with senior officers of State Transport Department but we have boycotted the meeting and urged that the concerned Minister should hold the meeting.

The employees are against the privatization of roadways and will protest against the decision on July 15 in Chief Minister Manohar lal’s constituency, Karnal and submit a memorandum to him regarding our demands, he added.
